The 5+1 last but not least best museums of myathenian Top 15 + 1 Museum List. On my previous posts  we discovered my best top 10 Athenian museums, so lets find out the next 5+1 and last ones to complete our journey in history and culture.

  1. Numismatic Museum

     Numismatic Museum

     The Numismatic Museum is one of the most important museums of Greece and houses one of the greatest collections of coins, ancient and modern, in the world. The museum itself is housed in the mansion of the archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann, formally known as Iliou Melathron.

     Tip: The museum is located right in the city center and owns a beautiful garden where you can relax and enjoy a nice cup of tea in the morning or a glass of wine at late afternoon!

    Cycladic Art Museum

     Τhe Museum of Cycladic Art is dedicated to the study and promotion of ancient cultures of the Aegean and Cyprus, with special emphasis on Cycladic Art of the 3rd millennium BC. It was founded in 1986, to house the collection of Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris. Since then it has grown in size to accommodate new acquisitions, obtained either through direct purchases or through donations by important collectors and institutions.

    Tip: Discover the Cycladic civilization which flourished on the islands of the central Aegean during the Early Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC). The MCA maintains one of the largest and most complete collections of Cycladic antiquities in the world, with representative samples of marble figurines and vases, bronze weapons and tools and pottery of all phases of the Early Cycladic period.

  3. Goulandris Natural History Museum

    The Museum’s complex includes two interconnected buildings, the Goulandris Natural History Museum building and the Gaia Centre for Environmental Research & Education, both significant cultural centers devoted to the study, preservation and protection of the natural environment through research, education and exhibitions.

    Tip: Visit the Gaia Exhibition and see the «Geosphere», which is unique in the world, its a hemispherical dome- monitor of 5m of diameter and of approximately 40 m2 of surface. It shows the rotating planet in 225,000 high resolution images. It also presents, in a brief and concise way, the geological evolution of the planet from its creation, 4.6 billion years ago, until today.

  4. Battleship Averof Naval Museum

    Battleship Averof Naval Museum

    Georgios Averof is a modified armored cruiser built in Italy for the Royal Hellenic Navy in the first decade of the 20th century. The ship served as the Greek flagship during most of the first half of the century. Although popularly known as a battleship, she is in fact an armored cruiser the only ship of this type still in existence.

    Tip: After visiting Averof Battleship, take a walk at marina Flisvos and enjoy the great view.

    Epigraphical Museum

    The Epigraphical Museum is unique in Greece and the largest of its kind in the world. Its collection comprises 14,078, mostly Greek, inscriptions, which cover the period from early historical times to the Late Roman period, primarily in Greece.

    Tip: For the photo lovers the museum also comprise photographic archives.

The museum comprises the collection of about 1200 Greek popular musical instruments dating from the 18th century to the present day, the fruit of a half century of research and study by the musicologist Fivos Anoyanakis. “MELMOKE” was established and functions since June 1991 as public entity supported by the Greek Ministry of Culture.

Tip: In Museum are delivered daily courses of musical instruments and traditional song.
